  • Update on my mom...

    Dear friends,

I'm sitting at the hospital and wanted to take a quick moment to update you all on my mom. For those of you who don't know, she was diagnosed with stage four (the most severe) ten years ago. She has been fighting a battle with breast cancer ever since then.

Just over a week ago she had to come into the hospital again, and at that point we realized her lungs and kidneys were beginning to fail. Barring a miracle at this point, there is no way she'll make it much longer. We have begun the difficult process of preparing to lose her, and saying goodbye should she not live much longer. It's really hard to know what the future holds, but every day, even every hour, is a gift from God at this point.

But if you stop and think about it, that is not much different than her situation 10 years ago. Or all of her life. Actually, it's not much different than any of our situations.

We as a society have been trained to fall into a panic when it looks like someone's "time has come." But we have to remember that life - and death - are uncertain. There are no guarantees for anyone as far as how long their life will last. We tend to assume that healthy people have years ahead of them, and that seriously ill people are going to die soon. But we really don't know when we are going to die. We only know that all of us, someday, will die. He 9:27.

The important thing is that you are prepared to die, regardless of when your time comes. Because we are all sinners, and have broken God's holy law, we are separated from Him. As a perfect and righteous Creator, God MUST punish our sins. However, because He is also loving, He didn't want us to be separated from Him forever. He wanted to make a way for our sins to be forgiven. So God sent Jesus Christ, His only Son, to die on the cross and take the punishment for our sins. Jesus rose again from the dead, proving He was really God, and now He wants all of us to have our sins forgiven too. The Bible says that if you "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be saved." Acts 16:31.

I am thankful that no matter what happens to my beloved mom in this life, she will spend eternity with God in heaven, because she has put her faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. I don't have to sorrow at her death, "as those that have no hope." 1 Thes. 4:13. Death has lost its sting, and the grave has lost its victory. 1 Cor. 15:55-57.

How about you? Do you know for sure that when you take your last breath, your sins are forgiven, and you will spend eternity in heaven with God? If not, talk to me, or visit http://needgod.com/ for some answers straight from the Bible.

Thank you all for your prayers and friendship. We continue to pray that God does a miracle and prolongs her life here on this earth. If not, she will have an early start on her eternal life in heaven. God bless you all!

  • Mike Huckabee- still an option

While the vast majority of the media, and now several conservatives will tell you that the Republican Presidential Primary is a "two-person" race between Romney and McCain, I feel there is another candidate that is worthy of our attention- Mike Huckabee. Let me be clear- I'm not bashing Romney, a man I feel is a great candidate. Should he eventually become the president, I would not be overall disappointed.
My point today is that Mike Huckabee is an amazing conservative candidate, not because he would be a great pastor, but because he would be a great president. Contrary to what some would have you believe, not all evangelicals support Romney. A simple google search will provide you a number of "evangelicals that support Romney." But there are just as many evangelicals that are against Romney. Notably, most pro-life organizations are solidly behind Huckabee.
Google can also provide either side with plenty of ammunition for the economic debate. True, Huckabee has some questionable economic ideas. But there are checks and balances on what a president can do on the economic front.

    Why I'm Supporting Huckabee

As Christians, or even concerned citizens, we must pay attention to "the issues." But let's face it- often, the issues are quite skewed by the time they pass through the media filter and reach the average person. Overall, I think it's important that we have a president that doesn't compromise his beliefs, and has the moral resolve to stand against the enormous political pressure that besets the oval office. Mitt Romney has stood firm on some issues such as marriage, but has conveniently played the "pro-life card" or "pro-choice card" where it suits his political purpose. In his own voice, while campaigning in Massachusetts, Mitt Romney affirmed his belief in a woman's right to choose, even though that position went against the dictates of his own faith. Now, when he is trying to reach a nationwide conservative audience, he is "pro-life." Maybe he is sincere. Maybe not. A number of good conservative men and women disagree. But with Huckabee, we don't have to question his sincerity. He has stood by his convictions, for better or worse, regardless of the scathing criticism it has brought from the national media.
While we can sit here and bicker for years on end about the economy, I want a president that has moral resolve.
This is based on his performance as governor, not as pastor. I agree that we should vote for a president, not a pastor. But before we hang Huckabee for his past career as a Baptist pastor, let's not forget the Romney is a Bishop in the Mormon church.
One final thought: Is anyone else at all concerned that the liberal media wants to push McCain and Romney on us, and has no interest in seeing Huckabee have a chance at winning? Just curious.

All that said, I am supporting Huckabee. But even more important, I am sticking with the Republican party, regardless of whether "my candidate" wins or loses. I despise third parties, such as the "constitution party," which divide the conservative vote. My exhortation to all fellow republicans (or democrats) is this: if you don't like the candidates in your party, then change them. No party is "beyond hope", as evidenced by the rise of Romney and Huckabee and the downfall of Guiliani. Beyond the "issues" at stake in this year's primaries, perhaps the biggest lesson we can learn is that our participation in the primaries is just as important as our vote come November 2008.

God bless, and get out and vote!
