While the vast majority of the media, and now several conservatives
will tell you that the Republican Presidential Primary is a
"two-person" race between Romney and McCain, I feel there is another
candidate that is worthy of our attention- Mike Huckabee. Let me be
clear- I'm not bashing Romney, a man I feel is a great candidate.
Should he eventually become the president, I would not be overall
disappointed.
My point today is that
Mike Huckabee is an amazing conservative candidate, not because he would be a great pastor, but
because he would be a great president. Contrary to what some would have you believe,
not all evangelicals support Romney.
A simple google search will provide you a number of "evangelicals that support Romney." But there are just as many evangelicals that are
against Romney. Notably, most pro-life organizations are solidly behind Huckabee.
Google can also provide either side with plenty of ammunition for the
economic debate. True, Huckabee has some questionable economic ideas.
But there are checks and balances on what a president can do on the
economic front.
Why I'm Supporting Huckabee
As Christians, or even concerned citizens, we must pay attention to
"the issues." But let's face it- often, the issues are quite skewed by
the time they pass through the media filter and reach the average
person. Overall, I think it's important that we have a president that
doesn't compromise his beliefs, and has the moral resolve to stand
against the enormous political pressure that besets the oval office.
Mitt Romney has stood firm on some issues such as marriage, but has
conveniently played the "pro-life card" or "pro-choice card" where it
suits his political purpose. In his own voice, while campaigning in
Massachusetts,
Mitt Romney affirmed his belief in a woman's right to choose,
even though that position went against the dictates of his own faith.
Now, when he is trying to reach a nationwide conservative audience, he
is "pro-life." Maybe he is sincere. Maybe not. A number of good
conservative men and women disagree. But with Huckabee, we don't have
to question his sincerity. He has stood by his convictions, for better
or worse, regardless of the scathing criticism it has brought from the
national media.
While we can sit here and bicker for years on end about the economy,
I want a president that has moral resolve.
This is based on his performance as governor, not as pastor. I agree
that we should vote for a president, not a pastor. But before we hang
Huckabee for his past career as a Baptist pastor, let's not forget the
Romney is a Bishop in the Mormon church.
One final thought:
Is anyone else at all concerned that the liberal media wants to push McCain and Romney on us, and has no interest in seeing Huckabee have a chance at winning? Just curious.
All that said, I am supporting Huckabee. But even more important, I am
sticking with the Republican party, regardless of whether "my
candidate" wins or loses. I despise third parties, such as the
"constitution party," which divide the conservative vote. My
exhortation to all fellow republicans (or democrats) is this: if you
don't like the candidates in your party, then change them. No party is
"beyond hope", as evidenced by the rise of Romney and Huckabee and the
downfall of Guiliani. Beyond the "issues" at stake in this year's
primaries, perhaps the biggest lesson we can learn is that our
participation in the primaries is just as important as our vote come
November 2008.
God bless, and get out and vote!
